Apple crumble
A true British classic
Crumbles became popular in Britain during the Second World War. Rationing had led to a lack of the ingredients needed to make the pastry required for pies, so people got creative and made a crumble topping with the limited ingredients they had available instead.
Crumbles can be made with lots of different types of fruit, but the apple variety can't be beaten in my view! Great served with ice cream, custard or cream.
Ingredients
- 50g butter or margarine
- 100g plain flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 100g sugar (caster or granulated)
- 600g apples (peeled and thinly sliced)
- 50g raisins or sultanas
- Grated rind of half a lemon (optional)
Method
- Start by making the crumble topping. Place the butter and flour into a bowl, then using your fingertips, rub together until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
- Add in 50g of the sugar and also the cinamon, if using. Stir well and set aside. The crumble should have a coarse, crumbly consistency.
- Grease an ovenproof dish measuring approximately 26 x 18 x 6cm with a little butter.
- Place the apples, the remaining 50g of sugar, the raisins and the lemon rind (if using) into the dish and mix well.
- Spread the crumble mixture evenly over the apples and raisins.
- Bake at 190°C for around 30 minutes until the crumble layer has turned golden brown and the apples have started to bubble.
- The crumble is best served hot, but can also be eaten cold.
