Far aux pommes
A delicious twist on a Breton favourite
Today we're #tbt to our last visit to Brittany when Tom's mum made us a delicious Breton far. Although more often made with prunes (sometimes soaked in rum), Marie's version of this classic Breton dish uses apples instead... and it's totally yummy! It can be eaten as a dessert, a mid-morning snack or even for breakfast. Bon appétit! (...or as they say in Brittany, kalon digor!)
Ingredients
- 2 dessert apples
- 100g plain flour
- 120g sugar (demerara or caster)
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 250ml milk
- 250ml single cream
- A small amount of butter to grease the baking dish
Method
- First, peel and cut the apples into small, flat pieces.
- Next mix the flour and sugar together in a large bowl.
- Crack the eggs into a separate bowl and beat with a fork. Add in the vanilla essence.
- Add the egg and vanilla essence mixture to the flour and sugar, stirring continuously as you do.
- Next add the milk and cream to the mixture. Keep whisking until smooth and lump free.
- Add in the apples and stir. Then pour into a baking dish, roughly 25-30cm in length and greased with butter.
- Cook your far at 180°C for around 45 minutes until the top is slightly browned.
- Cut into slices and serve warm or cool according to your preference.
- Enjoy!
