Luxury hot chocolate with marshmallows
A naughty treat for hot-chocoholics!
Tom and I are just back from a long weekend away in Liverpool - an amazing city with so much to see and do! We visited the Albert Dock, walked along the Mersey, had our photo taken by the Beatles statues, saw the Liver Birds and The Three Graces, visited both cathedrals and - the highlight for me - went to the world famous Cavern Club!
We stayed in a budget hotel near the centre and each morning went out for breakfast, which, for Tom, has to include hot chocolate.
And here the problems began.
We went to the café of a well-known chain store twice, and also to a well-known fast-food restaurant. Each morning Tom became more and more disappointed - and with reason. The chocolate was made with hot water rather than milk and was full of sugar.
Of course, this is not just a Liverpudlian issue. In my experience, it’s pretty standard for much shop / café bought hot chocolate in the UK, unfortunately.
After three days of bad breakfasts, we vowed that next time we go away, we’ll make breakfast - and so, hot chocolate - in our hotel room. We’ll pick up some croissants from a bakery or a supermarket, bring some Cadbury’s chocolate powder from home (can’t go wrong with Cadbury’s), and somehow heat up the milk. We’re obviously still working on the details of how we’ll actually do this…!
Back at MyMeals365 HQ on Monday evening, Tom was crazy desperate for his hot chocolate fix. A pitstop at the supermarket on our way back meant that I was able to get the necessary for the delicious treat below. And I can tell you that Tom felt a whole lot better after drinking it…
Ingredients
- 600ml milk - full fat or semi-skimmed
- 150ml double cream
- 100g chopped chocolate
- Mini marshmallows to serve
- Optional: Chantilly (or spray) cream
Method
- Add the milk, cream and most of the chopped chocolate to a pan. (Keep a tiny bit in reserve for decorating when serving). Bring the mixture to the boil, stirring all the time.
- Pour into mugs, or if you have them, tall latte glasses. Decorate with Chantilly (or spray) cream if using, mini marshmallows and the grated chocolate.
NB This recipe makes 4 , but if you save it to your MyMeals365 app, you can change the number of servings and the app will work out the exact quantities of each ingredient you need.
